So Persephone has a really cool story. She and her mother, Demeter, were super close, both beautiful and lovely. Demeter made the crops fruitful all year round. One day, Persephone was out gathering flowers and Hades, the God of the Underworld stole her away, and brought down to his world. Of course, her mother was going nuts, looking everywhere for her. When she found out where she was, her wrath was insane, as any of you moms can relate to! She shut everything down- killed all the crops, and went raging all over earth. In the meantime, Persephone was super sad, but then started warming up to Hades. I picture him like the bad boy in a teen movie- brooding, kind of evil, but charismatic. Persephone had refused to eat, but Hades talked her into having 6 pomegranate seeds. Once she ate the food from Hades, she belonged there. But because Demeter was up on earth, raging it up, killing crops and such, Zeus was freaking out, because he didn’t want the humans to starve and start...

How I Became The Goddess of Holistic Fitness Transformations

Most people know me as a personal trainer and nutrition coach. That’s true. But in the past few years, some things have happened that have made me change the whole concept of my business, what I want to do, and how I want to help people. I recently became the Goddess of Holistic Fitness Transformations.
But I haven’t always felt like a goddess. Four years ago, many many years into my personal training career, my own personal trainer approached me about training for a fitness show. I thought it sounded fun, so I agreed. I had no idea what I’d have to do. On my journey, I started severely restricting my food intake, only allowing myself lean meat and veggies. I boiled my chicken, so it had almost no fats or salt and I didn’t eat a piece of fruit for months. I started my day with a protein shake (just protein and almond milk), then ate chicken or tuna or fish and vegetables the rest of the day. Some of you might remember how cranky I was!

Stop Dieting Forever!

I have been on every diet under the sun. I have tried Weight Watchers, low carb, no carb, carb cycling, ketogenic, vegan, smoothie, alkaline, and probably more that I can’t even remember. They all had parts that were great, and parts that I hated. I always liked learning new recipes, and trying different ways of eating. I became addicted to the feeling of the beginning of a new diet: THIS is the one that is going to work for me. It was always a new beginning- a promise of how great I was going to look and feel.

I hated that feeling that other people can eat fun things, but I couldn’t. I hated that no matter what diet I tried, I never got the results I wanted. I hated failing. I hated not being allowed to eat a piece of bread, or plate of pasta or birthday cake. I hated being hungry. But at the same time, I loved it. Ah February – cold and crappy, the month where the groundhog might predict an early spring, and we are supposed to feel all hearts and flowersy because it’s Valentine’s Day. It’s the month of love. You are supposed to declare your love for the people in your life.

But what about the most important person - you?

What about declaring a whole crap-ton of love for yourself?

Does that sound crazy to you? Are you like, “Love myself? But I’m fat. I look gross. I can’t do anything right. I screwed up at work. I’m lame”

Work Out Like A Warrior Goddess

So how do you work out like a warrior goddess? Athena’s workout would be about power, strength and agility. She wants to get the most efficient workout in the quickest time – Athena is all about working out smarter not harder. Want to be as powerful as a warrior goddess, lithe and lean and ready for anything? Add some of these into your program:

1.HITT intervals. High Intensity Interval Training is a quick workout that gets your heart pumping and burns fat in a short amount of time. You want a short, quick burst of energy- so intense that you can hardly breathe, followed by a longer recovery. For example, 30 seconds of hard sprinting, 1 minute or longer of walking recovery. By the 6th or 7th round, you should be totally exhausted.
2. Lift Heavy Stuff. The more muscle mass you have, the more energy you burn at rest (the more you get to eat!) Don’t be afraid to lift heavy weights- 5-8 repetitions until exhaustion.

Reasons You Are NOT Losing Weight

As I work with more and more women, and even just in talking to women, I hear the same limiting beliefs around weight all the time! Women say things like “I have a slow metabolism” or “Well, I am menopausal, so I know that’s why I’m gaining weight.” It makes me cringe! It makes me crazy!!

Here’s the thing- your unconscious mind is pretty much responsible for what happens to your body. It believes everything you tell it is true, and then it works really hard to make it true. If you are always looking in the mirror, thinking, “no matter what I do, I can’t lose weight”, or telling people you meet about your slow metabolism, you better believe that you can’t lose weight and that your metabolism is slow. Your unconscious mind has made it so. And then your body gives you evidence of this, so you are proving it to yourself!
